STEP Central Webinar: STEM@SU: A Portfolio Approach to Increasing Recruitment, Retention, and Graduation of STEM Majors
Abstract: Increasing enrollments and success of STEM majors is unlikely to result from a single, large-scale change in practice. Instead, multiple, complementary strategies matched to the needs of prospective and enrolled students are more likely to result in the growth of STEM majors and graduation rates. We will review several strategies recommended to increase recruitment and retention of STEM majors (e.g., science camps, transfer student outreach, early research experiences, peer mentor programs, learning communities) and will then briefly describe our successful efforts to increase enrollments of STEM majors at a Salisbury University, mid-sized comprehensive institution as well as challenges in implementing multiple approaches simultaneously. Participants have the opportunity to dialogue about approaches and challenges on their campuses and will also be provided with a bibliography of relevant literature.
