Opening the Portals of Discovery: Increasing Opportunities in STEM Through Collaborative Research

Portals of Discovery leverages the strengths of the UW System by fostering collaborations among students, faculty, and institutions to increase STEM attainment.

Portals of Discovery, a partnership between the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc (a freshman-sophomore campus) and the University of Wisconsin-Stout (a baccalaureate campus), engages, recruits, and retains students in STEM fields through collaborative research experiences. UW-Manitowoc and UW-Stout will expand the program through facilitation of collaborations between other institutions within the University of Wisconsin System. We describe the changes implemented locally and across institutions as a result of this program, which include new collaborations across 2 year and 4 year institutions, increased participation in STEM, and a shift in institutional culture toward one of active STEM attainment.
