InTeGrate: Interdisciplinary Teaching of Geoscience for a Sustainable Future

InTeGrate supports the teaching of geoscience in the context of societal issues across the undergraduate curriculum.

InTeGrate is NSF’s GeoSTEP Center, focused on interdisciplinary teaching of geoscience for a sustainable future. Geoscience has important expertise and perspective to contribute as our nation and the world struggle with significant environmental and resource challenges. Meeting these challenges will require a savvy public, a new kind of geoscience workforce, and a broader understanding of geoscience by all who engage with these issues. InTeGrate is a five-year community effort to improve geoscience literacy and build a workforce prepared to tackle these complex environmental and resource issues. In order to do that, InTeGrate supports the teaching of geoscience in the context of societal issues across the undergraduate curriculum. Supporting teaching involves (1) developing and assessing new curricular materials, (2) facilitating the implementation and assessment of new programs, (3) providing professional development opportunities for undergraduate faculty. Assessment of student learning from the materials and geoscience literacy is a critical component of our project, as well as overall program evaluation. In our first year of funding, we made significant progress in all areas. We are currently collecting assessment data from 1000 students in 28 classrooms. We are supporting 6 module authoring teams and more than doubling that number this year. We have a team of 9 assessment consultants developing assessments, looking at results and supporting development and review of materials. Our biggest challenge has been figuring out how to scale up to community processes. We responded to the challenge of too much work to do by creating systems of people who can work together to get it all done. These are supported by software that we developed and by a collaborative, team-based management structure, and a culture and values that support working together effectively. We are interested in what other STEP PIs see as opportunities for collaboration as well as targets of opportunity for moving the collective enterprise forward.
